Those cool "Sugar White" beaches of the 30a corridor Florida's Panhandle and it's vibrant emerald green water colors. My southern travels lead me to live in Long Beach, Mississippi for round about 4 years and Mobile, Alabama for a year prior. I enjoyed living in Long Beach very much and loved to walk the beach, often alone, for the beaches lovely as they are were rarely populated. I enjoyed it so much I have considered buying a piece of property there for my future retirement.
I moved to Long Beach after the famous storm Hurricane Katrina. Little was left along the Gulf Coast scenic highway of Mississippi now lacking good restaurants and entertainment. I could understand why locals traveled 5 hours to the Florida Panhandle because of the lack of both but why leave the Mississippi Gulf Coast for a better beach?

Long Beach and Surrounding Communities Have Nice Beaches
The picture above shows the beauty of the beach in Long Beach, Mississippi and its surrounding communities Pass Christian, Gulfport, Biloxi, Bay Saint Louis and Ocean Springs. My sister and her family would travel from Dallas, Texas and visit me often on the way to the Gulf Coast Florida beaches. She had gotten accustomed to the Florida Panhandle's white beaches and she made numerous comments about the Mississippi beaches being not as white. What I really remember, however, and what stuck with me was her comparisons of the color of the water. What is it about the"sugar white" sand that makes the water of Florida Panhandle beaches so much more vibrant in color than the Mississippi beaches?

My Florida Panhandle Visit
Recently I visited my cousin Lana Stansbury a Realtor along the famous 30a corridor. She lives in Santa Rosa, Florida where this visit offered me the luxury of visiting the beaches of the Florida Panhandle. These pristine white beaches are labeled by the locals "sugar white" in color. I could see by the magnificent beauty of these clean white beaches why the residents of southern Mississippi and southern Alabama choose to visit the beautiful Florida beaches along corridor 30a.
One hundred and thirty miles east of Fort Walton Beach is a river called Apalachicola River. From this river oval shaped quartz washes down to the Florida Panhandle beaches creating the white perfection along the shore line. In addition to the "sugar white" shore, the sun reflects on these quartz granules causing reflections that color the water with rich emerald greens to vibrant turquoise. The quartz is also said to be cooler to the touch as it glistens in the sun compared to other beach sand temperatures. Squeaking under foot as you walk these cool beaches is the evidence of the oval shaped quartz sounding out it's presence with every step you take.
